Q: What is a doula? Why would I want one?
A: A doula, or labor assistant, is a person, usually a woman,
who provides emotional support to women in labor. Women who
use doulas have been proven to have shorter, more comfortable
labors, and require fewer medical interventions.
Q: What does a doula do during labor?
A: Massage the mom-to-be. Work with her partner to help her feel
comfortable. Speak in a low voice. Suggest alternative positions.
Help mom focus on her breathing. Remind mom about the details of
her birth plan. Get a cold compress. Get a hot compress. Get
dad a sandwich. Make eye contact. Hold the space. Encourage.
Smile. And lots more!
Q: Who are you? Where were you trained?
A: My name is Honey Nichols. I was trained through ALACE, the
Association of Labor Assistants and Childbirth Educators, one of
the top two certifying organizations in the country. I am working
on my certification right now.
Q: What is your level of experience?
A: I've been studying for several years and have attended four
births as a doula, for four very different families in the Boston area.
Q: In what area do you practice?
A: Unique Birth is based in Somerville. I am most comfortable
working with women living or delivering in Cambridge and
Somerville. I am willing to work with women in Medford, Boston,
Arlington, and Watertown for an additional fee and some
flexibility about the location of prenatal visits.
Q: Does Unique Birth have an area of specialty?
A: I specialize in working with "alternative" family structures,
such as those created by queer and polyamorous families, as well
as supporting families in spiritual traditions outside the mainstream.
Q: Does Unique Birth offer backup?
A: Unique Birth has an arrangement for reciprocal backup with a
likeminded doula of a similar level of experience. Support for
your delivery is guaranteed.
Q: Does Unique Birth give referrals?
A: If you need to find a primary care provider, pediatrician, or
other pregnancy-related service provider, I am happy to assist you
as part of our working relationship. If we determine that we are
not a good match for each other, I will put you in touch with other
qualified doulas at no charge.
Q: I don't see my question here - how can I get more information?
A: Please feel free to email me (honey at uniquebirth dot com) or call 617.501.5108.
